I chose to write my book review on The Witch in the Well written by Sharan Newman. I enjoyed reading this book and making connections to things we have learned in class. The Witch in the Well brings us back to the middle ages. It focuses on medieval times and reveals the belief in witchcraft and myths in 12th century France. Although you are led to believe in mythical characters and witchcraft, it is really just the action of two human women. The main plot of The Witch in the Well is the influence of myths on the lives of the medieval people, especially Catherine, represented in this novel. The book is devoted to story after story of myths and stories that cause the characters to react and make decisions. The decision to go to Catherine’s grandfather’s castle in Boise is based on the legend of Andonnen, and is the decision that, with many twists and turns, saves the family treasure.

She is an independent thinker, often disagreeing with popular opinion, including her husband’s. She is not afraid to stand up to the supernatural and confront apparitions. She loves her family and enjoys a healthy sexual appetite, often being flirtatious and suggestive with her husband. She also respects Edgar, and prefers to air their differences in private, where they can “fight as equals.” (p.155).
