The Struggle of Reconstruction: North vs South

Who really did kill reconstruction? Who caused the most damage towards the famous idea? In the North and in the South a fight called the civil war took place. The civil war was a fight based on the want of ending slavery in the south, while the rest of the country needed to renew and reconnect as a unified government. This reconnection of the government was named reconstruction. While the north believed in freedom for all including slaves, the south wanted to continue the act of having slaves for their personal benefit. So the question is, North or South: Who Killed Reconstruction? Both the north and the south had part in the ruining of reconstruction for these two different reasons: the KKK in the south was killing and intimidating supporters/believers of reconstruction while the north was struggling with corruption and mostly wanted the focus on their own problems and issues.

According to Document A, the KKK was responsible for the murder of state senator John W. Stephens of Coswell. “He was foully murdered by the Ku-Klux in the Grand Jury room of the Court House…” Similarly, Document B illustrates how an african american man was being held at gunpoint and being threatened while his captors take away his freedom of speech and the freedom to make his own willing choices. These two quotes show how the south was to blame along with the north for the “death” of reconstruction because through the quotes you see how much power these people that loathed the thought of reconstruction and the freedom of slaves almost had everyone under their
