Jamestown was England's first successful colony, but it was not easy in its early days to get started. During the 1500’s many countries were fighting over land and trying to get to the Americas because of the profit that could be made. England on the other hand was late about 100 years because of problems they were going through with their leaders and changing from protestant to catholic back and forth. The Virginia Company started the voyage to Virginia, which was lead by rich investors that believed they could make huge profits. The Virginia Company wanted to get rich off of finding the Northwest Passage: a river they believed that would lead to the Pacific Ocean and would allow for easy trade with Asia, rare materials they would trade for with the Natives, and metals like gold off of the Spanish Ships that …show more content…
Some of the things that the Virginia Company wanted became a reality but before that they had many problems on the way to success. In the early days, Jamestown suffered greatly with diseases like salt water poisoning, deadly diseases carried by bugs in nearby swamps, and starvation. These all affected the Jamestown settlement in it early days before they started to plant tobacco and make finally profits and regularly supplying new settlers for Jamestown. Jamestown was considered a nightmare in their early days because of all the things that were going wrong. The virginia Company did not have much planning for the colony and was relying on the Natives to Supply and help them survive as well as shipments of food and people. This was a problem because the Natives attacked the English when they had landed in 1607 and they did not befriend the Natives
