Abstract Lupus has a large impact on women in the United States. Lupus is an auto-immune disease where a person with lupus’s immune system attacks itself to a point where their immune system is weakened. The main symptoms of lupus include butterfly rash, fatigue, random fever, and any type of stomach pain. Women are the most affected by lupus. This may be because of the connection between lupus and female hormones. Although there is no cure for lupus, there are multiple types of different medications made for lupus. Most lupus patients only need anti-inflammatory medication, however more severe cases of lupus need medication

More recently, there has been a study that has researched the medication Anifrolumab. This medication was found to lower cumulative glucocorticoid use and to lower SLE symptoms.

The Impact of Lupus on Women Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), also known as lupus, is currently affecting women throughout the United States and causes weakened immune systems. Lupus is a chronic disease where a person's immune system attacks itself. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that is found all around the world that mostly affects women with about 90% of the overall cases (Alic, & Adamec, 2022). Although there are various different medications patients with lupus can take to lessen the impact of lupus, every medicine either does not work, especially for more severe cases of lupus, or weakens the immune system. So because of this, there are researchers researching to find a more effective and less damaging medication for people with lupus. Lupus is more likely to be diagnosed in women ages 15 to 44. Researchers are determining if female hormones are one of the causes of lupus. If female hormones are one of the causes of lupus, then it would explain why women account for 90% of the lupus cases in the United States. Women that are Latino/Hispanic, American Indian, and African American are more likely to develop lupus and their symptoms are normally more severe. Lupus also affects women eight times more than men (Carson-Dewitt, & Cataldo, 2020). Women can also be affected by lupus during pregnancy. Women and their children are frequently affected by lupus. Women that are pregnant and that have lupus have a 30% chance that their pregnancy will end by having a miscarriage. About 25% of all babies that are born to a mother that has lupus are premature. Both of these things could happen because when a woman has lupus, the antibodies may cause blood clots that might interfere with the correct function of the placenta.
