How Does Title IX Promote Discrimination?

For as long as sports have been around, female athletes have been oppressed or prohibited from participating in the identical programs that their male counterparts could participate in. While misogyny and oppression may be prevalent, measures have been put in place to prevent disparities; e.g. title IX. The. “An Uneven Playing Field” by David Chen emphasizes the recent harm female athletes have faced. Additionally, “Exercising Their Rights” by Brook Ross further explains Title IX’s history and how it functions. Title IX affects girls’ participation in athletics by preventing disparities, providing equal access to educational programs, and requiring schools to equitably distribute resources to their programs.

To begin, Title IX prevents discrimination against participation. Chen highlights that “Title IX bans such discrimination in schools and colleges that receive funding from the U.S. government.” While it may seem minute, banning discrimination at government funded institutions allows a fair playing field for all athletes—not just males. This allows female students to not be held back by biased and outdated ideologies, but allows them to break boundaries. Title IX banning discrimination equalized the playing field and allowed female students to fulfill their maximum potential.

In her article, Brook Ross mentioned “It allowed them to take academic classes they had often been barred from”. As previously mentioned, Title IX prevents discrimination across all fields including academics. By allowing female students to not be barred from certain classes, it allows them to become more educated. This not only benefits the students, but it allows female students to rise and contribute to the world around
