“The Iliad” has been taught to many students throughout generations. Most people have probably heard of the great warrior Achilles, a Greek hero of the Trojan war. Achilles was believed to be invulnerable to any attack to his body except his heel. The other hero of “The Iliad” is the prince of Troy, Hector. Hector was known not only for his sympathy and respect, but for his nobility and family orientation. Both men are believed to be great heroes of the Trojan war, however, Hector is the more admirable Trojan hero of the two. Although Achilles is a strong hero, Hector has the respect of his people. A reason Hector is more admirable than Achilles is the fact that he fights for his family and his people. Hector is more family oriented than Achilles. For example, Achilles during his visit, only went to see a member of his family once, his mother, Thetis, all he did was whine and complain about what people were doing to him. Hector was also able to gain more respect throughout the story whereas Achilles might have lost respect to some readers. They both wanted to be respected, but Hector has more respect at the end of the book because he died an awful death. Achilles drug him around on the back of his horse, when Hector's only wish was to be given to his family for a proper burial. When asked to give up Hector body, Achilles laughed in his and his kingdoms face. Achilles did all of this because he was upset about Patroclus’s death, but if Patroclus would have listened to Achilles in the first place Hector would not have had the opportunity to kill him. The way Achilles killed Hector was disgusting and disrespectful to Hector and his family, adding onto the loss of respect for
