How can inaccurate coding affect your practice and what measures can you implement to increase coding accuracy?

The medical coding system has specific letters and numbers to all medical procedures, diagnoses, disease symptoms, unidentified conditions, drug reactions, surgeries and their complications, and other medical events. If only it were that simple, many coders grieve.

In physician offices, hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical facilities accurate medical coders are a necessity. Medical coders need to stay abreast on any new coding information. Hospital payments, physician reimbursement, medical data collection, and other assessments are based on these codes, accuracy is crucial.
