Greatest Inventions of the Industrial Revolution In the 1920s many inventions were created that changed people’s lives forever and many of them are still around today. The Industrial Revolution began in England, then spread throughout Europe then North America. The very first steam engine was invented by Thomas Savory in 1689, the engine was used to pump water from the coal mines. It was a great invention that made jobs easier for men working, it helped them move object that were too heavy for them to move themselves. The first steam engines were used in the mining industry, they were known as the “Miners Friend”. They helped speed up the process by removing water quickly and easily. Steam power, which was developed of many years, was extremely expensive and made devices more difficult to work with in the early 17th century. It was one of the most important inventions of the Revolution. The steam engine improved productivity and technology, and also allowed there to be more creations of smaller and better engines. In 1775, James Watt had formed an engine building and engineering partnership with Mathew Boulton. They had become one of the most important businesses of the Revolution it served as a creative technical center for much of the British economy. They solved problems they had found with the engines and spread the solutions to other companies. Steam engines had many great uses, from mines, to mills and a variety of other industries (Steam Power and the Industrial Revolution: 1760-1840). On October 16, 1846, history was made Dr. Morton’s tenacity driven by enthusiasm and discovery, he and renowned surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, John Collins Warren were the first people to have a successful surgical procedure performed with anesthesia. Anesthesia is the freedom of pain, Millions of people each year undergo some form of medical treatment requiring anesthesia (All about Anesthesia). Many other people tried various other drugs and gases like carbon dioxide which had similar effects. Also other things like cocaine injections to the eye, mouth and many other areas of the body were also found useful in blocking nerve impulses. American dentists began using nitrous oxide and diethyl. They gained popularity, but during a practice it failed to work on a patient during a demonstrational tooth surgery Therefore, they stopped using that drug. A Boston dentist, William Thomas Green Morton Therefore concluded that the idea was right but the gases they were using weren’t strong enough. Therefor he began experiments with sulfuric ether. He had successfully used it on various animals and dental patients. Morton had publically demonstrated the application of his new drug, to remove a tumor from his patient’s neck. This operation was successfully painless. Which meant the U.S. and Europe had a safe and consistent “anesthesia” was established and was also very safe.
