Understanding human relationships and their effect on people and communities is a common theme in literature. Only looking at the past relationships of the people in Salem during 1692 can help the reader understand the outcome of the trials. The acts of several girls led to the Salem witch trials; the persecution of more than two-hundred people and caused the death of twenty-one people. Jealousy, anger and fear fuel the motivation of revenge and death. By looking at modern musical selections pared with the text can help a reader better understand the events during the Crucible. John Proctor can be better analyzed through the text and through song. John Proctor was afraid of two things his fear of everyone knowing his mistake, and tarnishing his name. He knew that to save his wife he would have to sacrifice both. So as he pleads to the high court he becomes desperate and admits “I have known her, sir I have known her”(Miller 1148). In John’s final attempt to save his wife from death he admits that he had an affair with Abigail. In order to see if John is telling the truth they turn to Abigail. She in denial says “ If I must answer that, I will leave and I will not come back again” (Miller 1148). Abigail hates the fact that John wants to save his wife and will not let her be saved. So when Elizabeth is brought in for questioning and she while protecting the name of her husband says no. John is accused of witchcraft and Abigail does not protect John. Abigails new hatred for John is best expressed in the song Bad Blood by Taylor Swift “Now we’ve got problems And I don’t think we can solve ‘em You made a really deep cut And baby now we’ve got bad blood, Hey!”. Abigail hates both of the Proctors and as she is in control they will suffer. John will now be hanged for witchcraft and Abigail’s plans for her and John will never
