The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, portrays the tale of the Salem witch trials and the disarray it made. One of the primary characters is John Proctor. Proctor is put through numerous groundbreaking choices, much of the time every choice he makes, creates more issues and demonstrates an alternate side of his character. Throughout the play, Proctors personality begins to change, going from dishonest and rude to courageous. Proctor’s character develops immensely throughout the play. Proctor is a dishonest man. He portrays this trait in Act 1 when he encounters Abigail at Reverend Parris’s house. Abigail explains to Proctor how she misses him but Proctor doesn’t budge or speak of anything about the affair, Abigail is in shock when Proctor claims, “We never touched, Abby.”(Miller 1225).
