I would say that the protagonist of “The Snows of Kilimanjaro is an angry and regretful man This is because he married a rich women so he had no desire to write, which makes him mad because he wanted to be a writer. He is regretful because he is on his death bed due to gangrene, and has not written anything ever since he married his wife. He got gangrene from a thorn prick on his knee a couple day earlier and ignored it, thinking it was no big deal. I also think he is regretful that he married his wife, he only married her for her money. He has realized that money does not mean anything to him, he would rather be in love. For example the wife asked him if he loved her and he said “No. I don’t think so. I have never had.” (Hemingway, 1936, 1938). One characteristic of the protagonist is he gets bored with being in the same for too long. For example “It’s a bore” he said out loud. “What is my dear?” Anything you so too bloody long.” (Hemingway, 1936, 1938). Another characteristic is that he is adventurous. For example “where did we stay in Paris?” (Hemingway, 1936, 1938) shows that he and his wife have been to Paris. Also he is not scared of dying, he welcomes it. For example “Can’t you let a man die as comfortably as he can without calling him names?” (Hemingway, 1936, 1938)

One way Fitzgeald demonstrates the idea of the modernist period is when Charlie’s thoughts mingled with third-person monologue. For example “He had never eaten at a really cheap restaurant in Paris. Five-course dinner, four francs fifty, eighteen cents, wine included. For some odd reason he wished that he had.” (Hemingway, 1931).
