“The battleline between good and evil runs through the heart of every man.” (Solzhenitsyn) Between terrorism and abuse, evil is incorporated into everyone’s life every single day. In The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespear, the true nature of evil mixed with the power hungry couple of Macbeth, a nobel warrior, and his wife, Lady Macbeth, cause the downfall of a society. The twists and turns of the play highlight the acts of true evil and show the transformation of a seemingly sane and honest Macbeth into a crazed killer. The characters who show true signs of vile acts are, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the witches who initiated the spree. When Duncan arrived to the castle Macbeth was skeptical about the killing but Lady Macbeth was so determined to push Macbeth into the murder she questioned his manhood with quotes like “ Is it too full o’ Milk of human kindness?” (Shakespear 17) In a way she is asking Macbeth if he is man enough to finish the job and being the manly man Macbeth is, this was enough. Macbeth seems to already begin having psychological problems before the murder is even taken place and Lady Macbeth seems to be staying strong telling him to just forget it ever happened when he is hearing voices and having hallucinations. This is where Shakespear is truly showing the nature of evil in Lady Macbeth’s heart when she is at the center of a homicide and is happy the deed is done and The Macbeth’s were now in power. The tides begin to turn as the play continues. Lady Macbeth’s sanity begins to fade and Shakepear demonstrates what guilt can do to a character, even as evil as she. “ Out, damned spot! Out, I say!” (Shakespear 35) This was a quote from Lady Macbeth while she was sleepwalking, symbolizing the “spot” of guilt she couldn’t seem to get off of her hands.
