The passion I had for reading, was much like Malcom X’s in “Learning to Read,” an excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcom X. Malcom X was one of the most influential and powerful leaders in the Nation of Islam in the 1960’s. He was a key figure in promoting self-pride in the separatism movement for African-Americans. He encouraged the African-American population to cut political, social, and economic ties with the Caucasian community. Due to his ideals of segregation, he was widely accused of promoting racism and violence. After his stint in prison for 7 years until 1952, he made a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1964. Shortly after the pilgrimage, he became an orthodox Muslim, and assumed his Muslim name El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Once he converted
