Mary Surratt was tried and convicted as one of the conspirators in Lincoln’s assassination. She was guilty of knowing Lewis Powell and of Booth, but this was no reason she should have been put to death. She may have known of them wanting to kidnap the president but not of killing him.
After the assassination the police were arresting people who knew anyone that had a part in the assassination plot or knew anything about it. Mary Surratt was one person who knew some of the people involved in the assassination. She did not know details of the plot, but did know they were planning on kidnapping Lincoln.
