Social media marketing is the activity of obtaining website traffic or capturing attention through social media sites.
Social media marketing programs usually focus on efforts to create explosive and humorous content that attracts attention and encourages viewers and readers to share it across their social networks. This results in an electronic word of mouth commonly referred to as eWoM. It basically refers to any statement which the customers/consumers share via the Internet; maybe through instant messaging, social media etc; about an event, product, brand, company or service. The underlying message spreads and becomes viral from user to user and presumably resonates amongst them. The plus point of such a campaign is that it appears to come from a trusted, third-party source, such as their friends in this case, as opposed to the brand or company itself. It is rightly said that social marketing results in earned media rather than paid media.
