The technology and economics of the mesoamerican civilizations were affected greatly by the environment. The Incas and the Aztecs both thrived in their economy because they relied on agriculture within their society, along with their advanced agricultural techniques, and with trade to different societies through land and water routes. The Incas flourished for only about 100 years, being conquered in 1532 by the Spanish, and the Aztecs established their homeland in the Valley of Mexico in the 1400s. For example, because the aztecs were located in the valley of mexico, an elevated area where water flows down the mountains and drains into a series of shallow, marshy lakes that would lead the Aztecs to invent a floating island called a chinampa that was able to support the harvest of multiple crops year round such as maize, beans, and squash.The aztec also invented a reservoir that held clean drinking and washing water for all people in the empire. while the Aztecs used chinampas and reservoirs the Incas used terraces as a method of adapting to a very mountainous region that would otherwise be almost impossible to maintain a stable crop on. because of the environment and the location the incas settled in, they had to invent a way to plant around the environment. Since the environment was not good for crops due to its high altitude leading to colder temperatures and the pull of gravity on the sides of the mountain, the Incas built large flats of land a stair like pattern in which they can farm. Also the differ in the way that the Incas had no real currency unlike the Aztecs who, although unstable, did have a concept of money. and as far as trade goes, the Aztecs were in a prime and open location that they used to expand their empire while the incas were very secluded and trapped in my mountains, giving little to no interaction with other
