Michelangelo was one of the most famous artists during the Italian Renaissance. He was a sculptor, a painter, an architect, and painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling, which is one of the most famous intramurals in the world. He was the second born of five sons, and was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy with his parents Leonardo di Buonarrota Simoni and Francesca Neri. At the age of thirteen, Michelangelo apprenticed for Domenico Ghirlandaio, the city’s most influential painter at the time, but left after three years claiming that he had nothing else to learn. He went on to study sculpture in the Medici gardens, and lived with Lorenzo de’ Medici, the unofficial ruler of Florence. While he stayed in the Medici home, he perfected his technique with the help of Bertoldo di Giovanni, the keeper of Lorenzo’s collection of ancient Roman sculptures. After Lorenzo died in 1492, Michelangelo, who was seventeen at the time, started to study human anatomy to help him make his sculptures realistic. He would dissect corpses to gain a deeper understanding of bodies, and this gave him an advantage because his sculptures were almost identical to a real human. In 1538 when Michelangelo was 63, he designed the remodeling of the buildings around the Capitol Campidoglio on The Capitoline Hill. He crafted a sculpture of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius out of bronze, and that monument preserved traditional Roman monumentality. He was also made chief architect in 1546 after his creation and work at St. Peter’s Basilica. However, he returned to sculpture and created the Florence Pietà, and a self-portrait, as he made them for his own tomb.
