Classification of drugs in specific categories is important for health care professionals because while some hcp don’t administer drugs it is important to have knowledge of their use. This helps in determining which drugs interact with other drugs. Also helps the hcp to interact with and assist in care for their patient. 2. Give a description of the actions of drugs in each category.
Antiarrhythmic drugs are used to stabilize the heart when t is in dysrhythmia. Antihypertensive drugs are used to lower and control high blood pressure. Anticoagulants are used to thin the blood or break up a thrombus. Analgesic medications are pain relievers; a subclass of the category is narcotics which stimulate the central nervous system receptors or opioid receptors to cause a decrease in the perception of pain. NSAIDs are anti-inflammatory drugs which relieve pain caused by inflammation. Antihistamines block the immune responses of itching, hives, and swelling. CNS Medications such as anticonvulsant drugs are used to control seizures. Antipsychotic medications are used to treat psychotic episodes and serious mental disorders. Antidepressants treat neurotransmitter deficiencies by increasing the amount of neurotransmitter or preventing its uptake. Lastly, Anti-infective drugs such as antibiotics are used to fight infections caused by bacteria. 3. What is chemotherapy and which diseases are treated this way?
Chemotherapy is the combination of two or more drugs used to treat a disease. It’s generally used to treat cancer. It works by taking a combination of drugs that are toxic to specific cancer cells and it is used to attack those cells. The ten most common diseases that are treated by chemotherapy include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, adenoid cystic carcinoma, anaplastic thyroid cancer, bladder cancer, brain tumor, breast cancer, cancer in general, cervical cancer, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. 4.
