Introduction Prevention and awareness against several diseases is an ongoing investigation. Multiple Sclerosis being one of those diseases that affects approximately 400,000 individuals [2] . Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain, spinal cord and the optic nerves [1]. MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease (body’s immune system accidentally attacks its own normal tissues/organs). In MS specifically, the attack on the body deals with inflammation against the myelin and the cells that make myelin, also called demyelination. Demyelination results in scars on the myelin sheath that interferes with nerve conduction as shown in figure 1 [1]. This is essentially where the multiple sclerosis symptoms come from. The number and type of symptoms a certain individual obtains can vary from person to person depending on where in the central nervous system the myelin or axons are …show more content…
One of the studies, however, did not show any changes in mood after exercise training [14]. One randomized clinical trial (RCT) dealt with approximately 31 multiple sclerosis patients assigned to 3 different groups, such as treadmill training, yoga, or a control group. The treadmill and yoga groups were on an 8 week exercise regimen (24 sessions) and the control group followed a delayed exercise regimen. Depression, however, was not the primary outcome from this trial since it also tested for balance, speed, endurance, fatigue, depression and anxiety. Post interventions saw significant improvements in everything except the 10 m walk time decreased in the treadmill training group and there was no clear change in the yoga exercise group. The control group saw no change at all in this RCT
