Ashley and I picked murder and accusation as the concept for our performance. Neither Ashley or I have had any personal experience with murder, but we felt it was important to introduce that part of the play and felt like it was a good opportunity to mention the affects of murder and how the effects are much more widespread than we may think. As teenagers with siblings Ashley and I had many close personal ties to accusation so we added some quotes from arguments we have had to make the scene more relatable. Creating this script was a long process of trial and error as was the memorization of our lines. In the end neither was perfect, but I'm satisfied with how it turned out.
Ashley and I chose Oedipus the King because nobody else was doing it and as we began to do research on the play we thought that murder and accusation would fit well in with the play. For the concept of murder we chose a research article published in a psychology and psychiatry journal because it was reliable and showed research from many different people. We spent about an hour just reading through the script together. Then we wrote the first two words of every sentence on a paper and put the script away to force ourselves to start remembering the remainder of the sentence. When we ran out of time to spend together in person we FaceTimed and ran lines until we were too tired to do it anymore. We took your advice about the scene breaks and when we rehearsed together we made sure to always be mostly facing the audience. Choosing accusation definitely made the argument more personal and it was easier to be angry and yell at each other. Choosing murder for the first part and the narrative about all the consequences that murder can hold made it easier to really tap into that mindset of reporting a murder that was left unspoken about that needed to be taken care
