Assignment 2, Amy Joseph Heuristics are mental shortcuts that provide quick estimates for decisions about certain events. Heuristics greatly simplify one’s life and usually lead to correct decisions. There are a number of heuristics that humans use such as the representativeness heuristic, the availability heuristic and the simulation heuristic. Heavy reliance on the representativeness heuristic leads people to ignore other factors that can help shape an event such as rules of chance, independence and base-rate information as can be seen when using a person’s appearance to answer a question about them. The availability heuristic takes into account what is more salient than other events; this heuristic is evident when a person watches documentaries and attempts to judge whether the subject of said documentaries will occur in reality. Lastly, the simulation heuristic applies when more easily imagined events are judged to be more likely than other events; an example of this heuristic can be seen in the case of losing the lottery. …show more content…

In daily life, one may see a student with messy hair, papers falling out of his backpack, with an overall disorganized appearance. When asked if one believes that he always arrives on time on class, using the representativeness heuristic, one would probably say they do not believe that the student frequently arrives on time to class.
