June 5, 2018 Introduction:
We discover some elements in nature that are unknown and it’s difficult to know what elements are in these compounds. We can take a random substance that is unknown from nature and figure out what it is composed of by running simple lab tests. A real-world example of this would be how doctors examine a patient’s blood to see if they have overdosed off of drugs.
By using the procedures in this project 1 lab, we can determine what the compound is and how it is affecting an individual. One of the procedures is the flame test. In this test, we will be burning the unknown substance to get a color in the flame. Some of the colors that could be emitted are red, orange, or it can also be colorless. We finalize that by using the flame test, solubility test, and finding the pH to give us the factors to match with an element or compound.

Chemical properties are studied by reacting materials with other chemicals; in other words, by observing their reactivity. Chemical reactivity is used to establish the identity of an unknown substance, an analyte (Department of Chemistry, 2018). We will identify our unknown through quantitative analysis.
Chemical/Safety:
At all times, a laboratory coat, goggles and gloves must be worn when dealing with any type of chemical. In this case, we dealt with NaOH and HCl which are high corrosive. They may burn or irritate the skin or eyes and they must be used with extreme caution. If they are spilled, it should be reported first and then the TA should assist in the proper way of cleaning the spills. After the experiment is done, hands should be washed thoroughly. Do not pour any of your solutions or samples down the drain. Use the proper waste containers (Department of Chemistry, 2018).
