I am Scout: The Biography of Harper Lee is the life story of To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee. Harper Lee's parents named her after her grandmother, Ellen, spelled backward. Harper was raised in Monroeville, Alabama, the youngest of four children, by her parents Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham. She attended Huntingdon college and later transferred to the University of Alabama. Harper studied to be a lawyer like her father and older sister, but later found that the law was not her interest and advanced her love of writing instead. Harper struggled between the law and writing for a while until she decided to be and author. Harper Lee "would not stop to seek other's approval (Shields, pg. 55)." Harper dressed the way she did because, "the clothes she wore appealed to her because they were practical (Shields, pg. 55)." Harper overcame her obstacles by being true to herself and through the help of her supportive family and friends. Harper helped her older sister take care of their mother in her sick condition, along with the rest od the family. When deciding on continuing the family line of lawyers or becoming a writer. Harper over came these by trying both. At first in college Harper studied the law but found that it did not interest her so instead she focused on writing.Harper put all of her effort on writing and with the help of friends started To Kill a Mockingbird. First and for most Harper Lee was proactive, she took action and affected the world instead of letting the world affect her. She took charge of her circumstances and had her priorities in order. Harper put first things first, once she realized that she wanted to be a writer Harper determined her goals and values, then executed her priorities daily. By putting first things first Harper managed herself effectively which lead her success. All though "it took a while to get to know Harper Lee, but those who did realized something about her...
