Nicole Eustace in “Oh Say Can You See” examines the War of 1812 that takes place in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland and Virginia. This is where the British troops landed and marched to Washington D.C. Particularly examined is the exploits of U.S. General William Hull and also the adventure of U.S. General Andrew Jackson. Oh Say Can You See focuses mainly on U.S. General William Hull. Hull was an honored veteran of the American Revolution who lead 2,000 soldiers in the defense of the Detroit River area in 1812. Hull was accused of treason for his surrender of his forces without a battle. It is still puzzling today, as it was 200 years ago as to why he did what he did. Hull lead a ragtag army of undersupplied and starving troops. With little ammunition and no experience in battle, he felt his army would be wiped out. General is said to be completely opposite than Hull. Jackson won battles against the Creek Indians in Georgia and Alabama in which the United States of America was ceded 22 million acres of land. After, he went to New Orleans, Louisiana with an inexperienced army that was under equipped he had his troops build defenses and prepare for the British onslaught. This then lead to the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Many people felt that what lead to Jackson’s greatness was the “natural ardor of his temper” (Eustace 38). The success in New Orleans had been known for only a week. Jared Ingersoll, who was a representative in the congress of the United States had found out that the British officers were going to allow their troops to rape and plunder the local citizens. This is known as the story of “beauty and booty.” This shocked the American people because of the ferocity of the British officers.
