Al Qaeda came to power in 1988, after the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan after the Soviet- Afghan war. Soon after, the Soviet’s withdrew; Osama Bin Laden along with Abdullah Azzam founded the terror group Al Qaeda, which can be translated as “the base.” Osama Bin Laden was born in the north area of Yemen and was the 17th son of Mohamed Bin Laden. Nineteen suicide terrorists that hijacked 4 commercial airplanes executed the attacks. Two of those commercial airplanes were crashed directly into the World Trade Center in New York. One of the commercial airplanes headed towards Washington DC and crashed into the Pentagon, while the other commercial airplane was crashed into an open field near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Goodrich 2002). A Boeing 767 (flight 11) carrying 92 passengers crashed first into the North tower, while the other Boeing 767 (flight 175) carrying 65 passengers crashed into the South tower of the WTC just minutes after the first 767 crashed the North tower. Five terrorists hijacked both of the Boeing 767’s. Attacks of that magnitude were not expected to happen by the American citizens. Four terrorists hijacked flight 77 that crashed into the pentagon; on the other hand, four terrorists hijacked flight 93 and crashed it in an open field (Goodrich 2002). After the attack on the Word trade center in 2001, Al Qaeda continued with its terror attacks on multiple nations around the world. Al Qaeda attacked Madrid, Spain in 2004, killing 191, and injuring approximately 2,000 more Spanish citizens (Asbend 2007). The attacks on Madrid were attributed, first, to the group ETA, but evidence amounted and linked jihadist terrorism to the attacks (Abend 2007). Other attacks on nations post 9/11 are the London bombings that killed 52 U.K. citizens (ENP Newswire 2015). That attack on U.K. soil is considered to be its deadliest terror attack ever experienced. While there were multiple other attacks committed by Al Qaeda post 9/11, it would take book to get into every detail of these
