Have you ever wanted to go to sleep during a class because you are so tired. Sleep is a necessary part of adolescence life. Middle school students are tired at the beginning and throughout the school day. The students also will have more time to wake up before school with a later start time. Schools should start later because middle students need eight to nine hours of sleep, it can raise scores in academic classes, and seventy percent of teens are not getting the necessary sleep amount. Schools should start later because the test scores could rise. Justin O’Neill writes in his article, “Should Schools Start Later” “According to one 2012 study middle school students’ test scores rose in reading and math…”(20). Why does this matter it matter? This proves that teens are not getting enough sleep from after school jobs and extracurricular activities. The school district should push back school start times so teens can get enough sleep. If schools push back start times the students would be more alert and would be more proactive. Schools should push back start times because of how much time pediatrics say teens need to sleep. In Emily Richmond’s article “Why Schools Should Start Later in the Mornings” she writes. ”Pediatrics urged schools to adjust start times so more kids would get the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of nightly rest.”. What makes this important, this is important because the pediatrics which are more qualified to decide when the schools start.
