In Pierre Boulle’s only science fiction novel Planet of the Apes demonstrates statements of science fiction authorities from Kathryn Cramer, David Hartwell, and Isaac Asimov. Authority statements make a science fiction story more understandable and help develop a different image. Pierre Boulle demonstrates the ape’s mood towards humans through their inability to escape to reality, through the understanding how they are a self-made species, and through Ulysse’s survival on the planet Soror. Mood can change in someone who gets frustrated. In Planet of the Apes, Zaius forbids accepting Ulysse assimilating into the ape culture. There are only limited apes that know how the apes started off. Fortunately, Ulysse was able to witness the experiment. “He learned to talk. He refused to do any work. A month ago, he ordered me to do the cooking and washing up…I was too miserable. I abdicated. I have taken refuge in a camp with other women who are in the same plight” (244). This shows the take-over of the apes. They came together and overthrew the human rule. This shows an ecstatic mood because they learn new things about the ape culture. They later built their own civilization and government, “The whole planet is administered by a council of ministers, at the head of which is a triumvirate consisting of one gorilla, one orangutan, and one chimpanzee”(150). This is similar to the United States Senate because there is a representation of each kind of ape. The apes also have a parliament as Boulle states, “In conjunction with this government, there is also a parliament composed of three chambers: the Chamber of Gorillas, of Orangutans, and of Chimpanzees, each of which attends to the interests of its respective members.” (150). Boulle shows how the apes have adapted and are intelligent enough to organize themselves. One of the themes of Planet of the Apes is the discovery within themselves. Being a self-made species connects to the previous authority idea since the apes are their own species, they choose not to accept it because they don’t want humans to take over the apes. The mood shown through the ape’s self-made species is comfortable because they apes are sufficient in what they have accomplished as a
