As a Pope John student of four years, I personally have been stuck in the 'now what do I take?' slump when selecting elective courses for my schedule year after year. With interests all across the board, I have found it rather difficult to select classes that intrigue me personally and challenge me intellectually due to the limited and non-specialized electives offered. Pope John should increase the selection of elective courses offered to better enhance the overall learning experience for students in their schedule while enrolled. With the introduction of the eighth grade program, the need for more electives at Pope John has never been as necessary as it is now. While this promotes a more challenging curriculum and encourages students to broaden their studies, it also causes many problems for students when scheduling. A student may lack the grade or the background in that subject to pursue these upper-level classes, and therefore, is left with limited options. The selection of already limited courses is even further narrowed by year with the rule electives are only allowed to be taken once during a student's high school career (with the exception of band and chorus). It has been scientifically proven that students who engage in applied actives that coincide with the way they learn preform better on assessments. In simpler terms, if a student who learns best orally takes a music class, it stimulates their brain's auditory processing system. Constant stimulation to a dominant brain function leads to better retention and understanding in other disciplines due to the heightened audio processing abilities. The same theory applies to a kinetic learner taking sculpture class, or a visual learner in a history through film class. Most people are a combination of all three types of learning, so by enhancing the selection, Pope John can also enhance student's abilities to learn and most importantly retain
