Lastly, I recommend putting myself in another person’s shoes and thinking about what it is like to be interrupted. I do not need to think about what I will say to what I am hearing, I need to listen to what is being said and stop formulating a response or counter argument. I need to focus on my continuous development of proactive listening. Fortunately, proactive listening is a skill that can be acquired and developed with practice; it must be practiced and frequently applied to foster healthy relationships in the workplace. I recommend that I focus more on listening than speaking and hearing. I have no issues with hearing what a person says or speaking, but listening and focusing on the other persons thought and feelings and thinking about what I am going to say before I say it is something I will work on. Becoming a better listener will allow me to again align with the theory of servant leadership more.

It is critical I become a better listener to become better at interpersonal communication and better in client interactions. To develop my proactive listening skills, I will research proactive listening and read about it once a week for an hour over the course of eight weeks for self-training and personal coaching. I will also focus for the next 12 weeks on my actual interactions with others and how my research and self-awareness have impacted those interactions and I will write down and reflect on any instances where I continue to interrupt and how I can avoid this happening in the future.
