Pros and Cons of Background Checks
Background checks have become a necessity because applicant’s make false claims on their applications and resumes. The potential benefits of background screening increase applicants and new hire quality, reduce workplace violence; reduce negligent liability, loss of employee dishonesty, and avoid negative publicity. Use of pre-employment background checks also allows organizations to be more successful.
As stated by (Bryars and Rue, 2011), increasing the use of background checks has helped employers provide and fulfill their moral and legal obligations to their employees by providing a safe work environment. Employers are also given the opportunity to select the potential applicant appropriate for the work environment and available position. Performing background checks helps employers ensure their resumes are accurate, job history is consistent, and no criminal charges. Background checks also avoid wasted benefits; reduce training and employee development costs, increase productivity through hiring employees with better work ethics. However, mistakes can occur in the process of a background check. Also through a thorough background check false and misleading information as well as forged documents can be exposed.
Developing a clear human resource policy on background checks will allow companies to keep up with and follow applicable laws and comply with relevant laws. The law does not necessarily state that HR has to have a background policy however, developing a clear policy will ensure all prospective employees are treated
