Public Art
Nowadays, a variety of public art work is constructed all around the world. There are different kinds of the genre in public artwork, such as painting, mural, and sculpture. The shapes of public artwork can be abstract or realistic, as well as casted, carved, built, assembled, or painted. Public art is there for everyone so that it can be expressed through community values, improve our environment, and make connections through communication. Public art is installed where a lot of people can come and go so that they could easily encounter those works in their life repetitively(Visual-Art). Kate S. Buckingham donated the installation in honor of her brother Clarence, and it has been known as one of the famous ornamental fountains in America. The original title used to be Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain and it’s designated as a Chicago Landmark. The architect Edward H. Bennett designed the fountain and French artist Marcel F. Loyau produced sculptural elements. The fountain is constructed of Georgia pink marble and the scale is eighty-five meters in diameter, which is one of the largest fountains in the world. By looking at the ornamental fountain, there are four sea horses that symbolize the four states; Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana which all represent Lake Michigan (Chicago park district). In the center, there are fountains surrounded by water, and it has three different scales in layers. It has similarities in the design of the two layers from the bottom. Decorative shapes are on the sides in pattern and it seems like a shape of opened claim. The highest part also has the same design but its shape looks more like washbowl because it has around edges and has been more narrowed down, which is different from the layers at the bottom. Lake Michigan is near the fountain, and it seems the lake can be part of a background for the fountain, which provides a better view to attracting people. This is because while Buckingham Fountain basically operates with water, the perfect symmetry between the lake and the fountain restores peace and quite. Although there are buildings on the other side, it supports the general atmosphere. After sunset, lights of the buildings and the fountain match well together because the lights are also coming from the fountain when the water show begins at night. It also enhances the background effects because the different heights of the buildings that are in pattern don’t disordered shapes and it might disturb the view of there were no buildings or standing far away. While the lights from the buildings are randomly arranged and the fountain provides different colors regularly, it provides quite mood so that people can feel comfortable during the show. The pleasant environment also matches well with the fountain because there is nothing on the ground that disturbs the view around the area. The delicacy of the work might have given the feeling of stuffiness if the surroundings were crowded with trees. However, while there are flat tiles on the ground and grass around the fountain, people could enjoy the view and refresh themselves walking on the wide ground without any
