RAINFOREST

1. What is a rainforest?
A rainforest is a hot, thick, green forest that grows in wet places near the equator. It is a home for a large number of different plants and animals. It is mostly warm all year over there and it rains nearly every day. Therefore it is described as “rain” forest for the rainfall it receives per year. It receives annually at least 254cms or 100 inches of rainfall. 2. Where are rainforests found? There are two types of rainforest- temperate and tropical. Tropical rainforest are found all around the equator in Africa, central and South America, Asia and Australia, the biggest rainforest – the Amazon in South America and the Central American tropical forest - have the widest range of animals than anywhere in the world. Africa has the second largest area of rainforest after the Amazon - it –s spread of many countries. The Asian rainforest, which stretches from India to New Guinea, also has a huge variety of plants and animals. The Australian rainforest – Daintree located in North Queensland Australia is home to plant species that are rare. Temperate rainforests are found along coasts in the temperate zone. The largest temperate rainforests are found on North Americans Pacific coast and stretched from Northern California up to Canada. There are 25 rainforests in the world. The best known rainforests in the whole wide world are Congo, the Borneo, Mekango, Sagano Bamboo forest ( Japan), the Hon rainforest (Washington), Monteverde cloud forest (costa Rica), the Tongass National forest ( southeastern Alaska ) and Lacandon jungle (Mexico).

3. What kinds of animals and plants life are found in the rainforests?

More than hay of the world’s species of plants and animals are found in the rainforest, which cover 6% of the Earth’s surface. It supports as many as 1500 flowering plants, 750 species of trees, 400 species of birds, 125 species of mammals, 700 reptiles, 60 amphibians and 150 species of butterflies. Few examples to include are as follows: -

Mammals- spider or however monkeys, jaguar, sloths capybaras (look like large guinea pigs), etc.

Flowering plants- bromeliad, orchids, rafflesia, the giant ----- flower, etc.

Reptiles- an awondas, caiman (crocodile), chlamydosaurs (caped lizards), etc.

Birds- toucans, scarlet macaws, hummingbird, neon’s, etc.

Butterflies- morph butterfly, swallowtail butterfly, morph butterfly, goliath birdwing butter,etc.

4. Indigenous people of the rainforests?

As well as million people live in the world’s rainforests. Different peoples live in rainforest villages. The name for people who belong to a certain area is indigenous people. These people depend on the forests for their food, clothing, medicines and shelter. To protect them from insects, the indigenous people apply paint on their faces to turn them away. They live in peace with the rainforests- hunting animals, fishing in the rivers, gathering fruit, nuts and insects and growing vegetables in small plots.
