Reflection On Officer Involved Shootings

“Few Agencies collect gunfight data, even fewer choose to freely share it” (Avenci pg.1). After I read “Officer-Involved Shootings: What We Didn’t Know Has Hurt Us”, my opinion had changed from what I believed was great to what actually could be more hazardous and harmful. The facts that were given to us was different from what you learn watching the news. I learned the hit ration is greater on a revolver than on a semi-automatic handgun, police officer has to maintain for a considerable safe distance, and low light scenarios account for more than 60% of police action shootings. I learned that a hit ration between a revolver and semi-automatic handgun favors the revolver. This is showing from when they had changed over from revolver to the semi-automatic handgun. A revolver in a hit scenario hit the intended target 35% while the semi-automatic only hit the target 25%. The distance that was considered safe was at least 21 yards if it was more of a lethal weapon. The distance for a less lethal weapon (OC, Tasers, etc.) is much closer than the 21 feet in order to deploy less lethal alternatives. I learned that most police officer’s deaths were caused from an unreasonable distance of 3-6 feet with a suspect. I believe the same distance is important because if you don’t realize how important the distance is from the weapon then you could ultimately risk your own life. This happens because you are more likely to hesitated on the person’s actions and cause your own death. Now sometimes you can’t change the distance, you could be talking to someone then all of a sudden you have a gun pointed at you, but if you know that it is a risky situation then you could try and put distance between you so your life isn’t on the line.
