Relationships In The Outsiders

In the novel The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, the entire story is driven by relationships. It’s plot is centered around the crippled relationship between the Socs and the Greasers. This relationship is what sparks most of the conflicts. For example, Johnny killed Bob out of self-defense because Bob and some other Socs were looking to hurt him and Ponyboy. The relationship between Johnny and Dally is an important and unique one. Johnny is 16 and has already been taken by life’s cruelty. Before the story even begins, Johnny’s already been beaten on multiple occasions. The Socs have led him to carry a switchblade with him everywhere he goes.
