In the 3rd century C.E., the Roman Empire was in crisis. The successful Severian Dynasty was at an end, and Rome found itself in decline. The Emperor’s control of the legions collapsed, and the frontiers were left exposed. Enemies surrounded the Empire, waiting for every opportunity to attack. The Germanic tribes probed the defenses in the north, and the Sassanid Dynasty in Persia sought to challenge Rome for her eastern provinces. The Sassanids captured the Emperor Valerian in 260 C.E., further illustrating how far Rome had fallen from its days of glory.
