In 1653, Sarah Good was born to a prosperous landlord named John Solart. However, her father’s estate was caught up in litigation that left her with nothing. She married to a poor servant named Daniel Hope, who died in debt in 1686. Her second marriage to William Good was doomed because the couple had to pay for the debts of the first husband. The two were homeless, renting rooms in other people’s homes, and they later had two children. William worked as a labourer in Salem village in exchange for food and lodging, but living became increasingly difficult for the family as Sarah’s reputation being socially unpleasant spread through the town. In 1692, the family became beggars. Sarah’s position as a “nuisance to the town” made her become a candidate for witchcraft accusations. She specifically became the first one to start the trials because most people in the town were in support of her accusation. During the trials, Sarah Abbey testified that she had allowed Good to stay in her house but eventually had to kick her out because of her malicious behaviour. Ever since then, they believed it was the work of Good’s witchcraft when the Abbey family lost their cattle to mysterious diseases.
