Reducing Dialysis Costs in Self-Funded Health Plans
The kidneys function to remove waste and extra fluids from the human body. When the kidneys fail, these substances build up in the blood and can lead to injury or death. Individuals need to take care to have their kidneys tested regularly, to ensure they are functioning properly, and to seek medical help when a problem is detected. Patients who fail to do so may develop a life-threatening condition known as end stage renal disease (ESRD).
The kidneys perform many other functions in the human body. They control blood pressure along with chemicals in the system. Furthermore, they produce red blood cells and keep the bones healthy. When they fail to function as nature intended, the body may …show more content…
Due to the high costs associated with this disease, health care providers and insurance companies continue to search for new ways to reduce the costs associated with this disease. Thankfully, new methods are being developed that will help to drive these costs down and level the playing field.
Sadly, the self-funded health care plans tend to be the hardest hit in this situation. There are numerous reasons for this, with the allowable charges for dialysis being just one. As more realize this is an issue, new strategies are being put into place to drive costs down.
