How did these collaborative efforts inform your practice as you planned, implemented, and published the project?
I knew during the planning process my students would need my support in some areas of the project. I helped my students in areas I knew they would need my support in, but they told me when I was needed. Students were able to realize on their own when they would need support in completing certain task, for example publication. Giving students the ability to openly reflect their thoughts and ideas of the project gave them a chance to work together, to determine when collaboration would be needed. Service learning allows students to gather the knowledge needed to master their grade standards, because every service learning project automatically can connect to social studies and English/language. Through the service learning project, students are also given the chance to reflect, which can be completed through journaling, building on students writing skills. Also, depending on the service project math and science can be incorporated in as well. However, the greatest skill students are learning are life skills. To advocate service learning to families and school personnel, I would show and discuss the benefits it has not only for the community but their child, giving families the opportunity to see their child master the content while helping the greater good. I would also focus on how service learning is a project that can easily integrate all subjects, showing school personnel that it would not interrupt or distract students from mastering the content. I would focus on how service learning promotes all areas of development: social, emotional, physical, and cognitive.
