Today sign language is considered to be one of the largest spoken languages across the world. Though, it did take an extensive time for people to begin even considering it as a language of its own. According to William Stokoe, the biggest similarity between sign language and other spoken languages was “finding parallels between the abstract grammatical structures of ASL” (Grammar) and those found in other languages.
