According to the reading, The Hunger Games and The Lottery are very different stories. However, both show the respect for the their traditions in their societies, and they try to keep the traditions that take away the lives of innocent people. The Hunger Games takes place in Panem which is a dystopic country built in North America, and they are divided into 12 district and the Capitol. In order to prevent the rebellion, the bossy government implements the Hunger Games which is forced the young people to engage in a fight to death competition with other children. Katniss who comes from district 12 asking to volunteer to take her sister’s place, and she successfully become the winner in the Hunger Games with Peeta. The Lottery is about the village people drawing the paper and choosing who will become the sacrificial offering. Tessie who gets a paper with black dot is stoned to death by the other villagers. They both explore their traditional activities, but there are some differences in these activities, such as, the process of the drawing, the form of …show more content…
In “The Hunger Games”, the winners can obtain the house which was dedicated to the winners. The quality of life has a huge change in that poor become rich. They don’t worry about the food, money, work, and so on. For example, Haymitch who is the winner in the 74th Hunger Games comes from district 12. After he won the Hunger Games, he became very lazy. And he looks drunk everyday. However, the winner is dead in “The Lottery”. In the story, Old Man Warner said: “Nothing but trouble in that, pack of young fools.” (Jackson, 234) Old Man Warner opposes to stop the lottery. They think the sacrifice is good thing, and it is for the prosperity of the village. So, all of the villagers are deceived by the lottery. In brief, the winner’s life is affluent in The Hunger Games, but death does not mean the end in The Lottery, and it is honorable
