Smoking should not be allowed to occur in any public spaces. Individuals have the right to smoke, but going into a public space with something that can be harmful to many other people makes smoking in public more than a personal choice. There are many reasons that smoking should not be allowed to happen in public spaces. Some of those reasons are that second hand smoke can cause damage to other people, it creates pollution in the surrounding air and smoking around others is unethical. Second hand smoke can have many health risks and side effects, especially for those with weakened immune systems, the elderly and the young. Children have developing bodies and lungs and are not ready to breath in toxins even more so than anyone else. Even healthy people can have life threatening side effects from second hand smoke. Many people do not realize that while smoking, toxins fill the air and not just the smokers lungs. While the person exhales or while the cigarette burns, many harmful substances are released into the air. Some of these chemicals include acetone, ammonia, arsenic, butane, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, lead, nicotine, tar and many others. Some of these substances are found in nail polish remover, lighter fluid, embalming fluid and rat poison. All of these chemicals are harmful and are damaging to many more peoples bodies than just the person who gets to choose what they are inhaling. Smoking damages and can ruin the cilia that line your lungs. These cilia are what trap and prevent unwanted debris and bacteria from entering your body and lungs. Many people can get sick or even die from the cilia being damaged from others smoking near them. Smoking is a personal choice that many people choose to make for themselves, but these people do not have the right to damage other peoples health with their
