There are all types of social media that inhabit our cyclic lives. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Tumblr are the more prevalent ones. Social media can be adopted for innumerable purposes, some favorable, some detrimental. Are they really as admirable as the masses dreams them to be? Is there bounteous qualities of social media besides liking and sharing? Why exert effort to locate the remote for the television and observe the news when you can browse on Facebook and discover the latest trending topic and converse with friends and family? Sure, it may be convenient for you, but what about the negative impacts? When it all boils down though, you are more susceptible to rigid elucidation and hectoring provided your statuses and pictures. A myriad of this behavior has led to a fairly immense rate of suicide and depression from users, mostly minors. One of the next big hypes is Snapchat. Tumblr paints an image of a safe zone to let creativity shine and individuality to blossom, but the reality is much darker. Many that go on Tumblr attempt to find relatable quotes, pictures, or blogs similar to their own or their ideals. For instance, if a user stumbled across a beauty blog and it objectified dangerously thin women with anorexia and eating disorders as “the ideal type”, a user may be inclined to starve themselves to a bone-thin state just to be considered “beautiful” in the eyes of others. Not only with that, but Tumblr users glorify mental illnesses and hypnotizes people to believe that depression is beautiful or to be proud of self-harmed scars.
