For the second semester of Northland CAPS, I’ve had the privilege of interning at Thornton Tomasetti (TT), an engineering consultant located in downtown Kansas City near Crown Center. Thornton Tomasetti mainly focuses on structural engineering yet also does work on engineering design and analysis services. As a cohesive unit, they work with clients all over the world on projects of every size and level of complexity. Preparation is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to finding success in the real world. It’s good to have an idea in mind as to how you’re going to approach each day and how much you can get done within in a certain time range. I think I did a good job of managing my time and putting forth my best effort. I clocked in-and-out every day with no issues and maintained quality effort all the way throughout. I wanted to show that I could translate my life in a classroom to an office and live up to the expectations. I don’t know if there’s anything I would’ve done differently. If there was one thing to point out, I guess I could’ve asked for more assistance/help every now and then.
I would recommend this work experience to anyone who wants to get a feel of what the office life is truly like. Early on, you will notice that you have a ton more individual freedom as compared to school. I, personally, had my own cubicle and was able to function there fairly well. Also, if you’re a student who wants to get a better understanding of structural engineering, this would be without a doubt a place to take into consideration. I was here for only a few months and got an extensive look at the structural
