Competitiveness has been seen as a negative force in our society. Over time it has been treated synonymous with greed, envy and narcissism. But competition is the only reason we have anything more than the hair on our head and dirt beneath our feet. Competition births creativity, innovation, it drives us to do the things we have done. Furthermore it promotes growth and advances society one step at a time. In fact, without competition, nobody would have a reason to make new, creative, and better products or services.
One of the more well known examples of positive competition is the space race. Without competition, we as Americans wouldn’t have won, or maybe never would have even tried to win the space race. Some people may argue that cooperation is better than competition. “Don’t you think that without cooperation, we never would have won the space race? If we hadn’t worked together, we never could have done it.” But if we as Americans didn’t feel the collective competitive spirit and need to win the space race and bring pride to America, we never would have banded together in the first place.

Competitiveness doesn’t discriminate, it is natural and exists for everything. On the other hand, not everyone can cooperate with everyone else. We as humans have different thoughts, feelings, opinions, reasons. We as humans are different, and different can be perceived in two ways. Different is dangerous to cooperation. Being different promotes thinking for yourself and trying new things while cooperation is about working as a team and thinking as a group. If one member of a team wants to do things in a new, better way but everyone else doesn't, that person could be seen as a threat to the group and the new innovation that could change the world is snuffed out unless that person breaks off and creates his/her own path, competing against his/her old team and releasing that new idea into our society and potentially, advancing
