In 1776 the United States broke away from england, event known now as the Declaration of Independence. When we declared independence, in order to maintain peace and order the United States needed a government. The Articles of Confederation was the first government of the United States, it went into effect in March, 1789. Written by John Dickinson, the Constitution lasted about 10 years before it was replaced with the United States Constitution. The Article of Confederation was replaced because it was too weak. There were many weakness in the government. The major weakness being the federal government was too weak to do anything, The congress could not regulate trade, It couldn’t levy taxes. The congress could create law, but it had no power to enforce them. The laws needed to be approved by 9 out of 13 states. The major problem I saw with the government was, the federal government had relatively no power. For example if the federal government wanted to create laws, they would have to get the approval of 9 states out of the 13, and that was likely never to happen since the states could choose whether they wanted to be in the session and only 9 or 10 states were in regular sessions. To create an amendment was even more difficult needing all out of 9 votes. If there needed to be a change in the government, it was likely never to happen since the votes required were impossible to get. If you couldn't change the government how are you going to improve it. It just wasn't possible for the government to get any better or patch up the previous
