Student Background Information Sam is a fourteen-year-old boy in eighth grade. He has been having off-task behavior problems since third grade. His grades have decreased this school year, especially his social studies grade at a 65%. His grades are low due to assignments being incomplete or carelessly done. If he completes an assignment, he does it quickly making many unnecessary mistakes. He has been observed by his teacher doing various off-task behaviors, such as reading books and magazines, drawing and doodling, daydreaming, and talking to his peers. His off-task behaviors usually occurred during independent work times and seldom during whole group instruction. His social studies teacher believes that Sam is able to complete grade-level classwork based on his class activities and the assignments he does complete (Curran, C., n.d.). His social studies teacher has created goals for Sam to achieve by the end of six weeks. Her goals are for an increase in the number of independent assignments completed. First, the teacher needs to identify when the student needs to make choices and the options they could have. A teacher could have the class fill in a survey about their likes, interests, and activities. Then the teacher needs to make a list of options, he or she could provide. Next, the teacher will clearly offer the limited choices to the student. A limited choice means two or three choices. Lastly, the teacher will evaluate the strategy and adjust the choices as needed. The teacher will evaluate how the student is responding to the choice-making strategy and decide if he/she needs to adjust the choices given.
