Sugary drinks have increasingly and widely become the bane of the 21st century. The decisions made by parents and caregivers in homes, schools, and organizations have greatly impacted on the beverage choices of children and youth across the United States. In the rural county in Texas recording a high percentage of Hispanics, children ages 5-12 and youth are faced with a gamut of social problems given that they are raised in families and communities with lower levels of education. This, in turn, tapers down to uninformed lifestyle choices and consequently, a less than a high standard of living.

This approach can be made more effective by organizing a parent-teachers forum with the aim of creating a synergy between both parties so that there exists a uniformity of purpose as regards discouraging the consumption of sugary drinks at school and at home. Skinner’s work posits that positive reinforcement increases the frequency of any behavior that produces it. Therefore, school administrators may institute a contingency management plan in form of a reward system where incentives such as an extra time at break periods are granted children who drink water or milk and parents can further encourage these children by doing something fun with them such as playtime at a bouncing castle or bowling center .The introduction of healthy drinks and offering an attractive reward system to children in this age group would positively reinforce the message, celebrate their efforts at change and motivate children who may put up an initial reluctance to a less sweet but healthier
