The Missouri Compromise was an effort by the U.S. to maintain a balance of power between the slave holding states and the Free states. The states with slaves were afraid of being outnumbered and lose power to protect their property and trade. The slaveholding territory of Missouri applied for admission to the union. States up north opposed the admission. The states up north had felt that the slaveholding states held too much power already. The Constitution allowed states with slaves to count each slave as three-fifths of a person for population.
