Harry Truman was born May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. Harry Truman did not go to college, he worked many different jobs, joined the National Guard, and volunteered to fight in World War I. Truman was very successful on the battlefield during the war. Harry Truman was known as a very forthright and decent man. Harry Truman became a Senator in 1934. Senator Truman headed the Truman Commission. The Truman Commission led investigations of fraud in defense contracts. Truman was deemed for saving the United States Government several million dollars. Senator Truman remained in the Senate until President Franklin Delano Roosevelt chose him to be his Vice Presidential running mate. Harry Truman became Vice president in 1945. After only three months as the Vice President, he became the United States President because of the sudden death of President Roosevelt. President Harry Truman was thrust into having to make many decisions that he was not prepared for, and had not been informed about. On August 6, 1945, and again on August 9, 1945, President Truman called for atomic bombs to be dropped on Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, Japan. It is believed that over 200,000 people were killed by the atomic bombs. Many historians believe that those atomic bombs were sent as a warning to Josef Stalin to show him that aggressive, hostile post-war negotiations would not be tolerated. On September 2, 1945, World War II ended
