One of the most important but neglected events in American history is the red scare of 1919. When people hear about the Red Scare, their minds jump to the 1950’s and McCarthyism. Most people associate the Red Scare with black listings and witch hunts dominating the news. The Red Scare of 1919 was much more violent than the later scare and a much darker part of history. The United States government worked against its own people, retaliating against unions demanding higher wages and better working conditions. The scare of 1919 also led to the arrest and deportation of thousands of Americans because of their radical views.
